Reflection English Tutoring

English tutoring

During the summer I tutored a 14 year old Dutch boy who takes English in his Dutch school. Due to the fact that I have been going to an international school for a while now I could help him improve on his English. For his summer homework he read a book and I was there to help him when he did not understand something. Furthermore I helped him a lot with his speaking skills, which he had some difficulties with. Helping a student who had some weaknesses in an area I feel pretty strongin enabled me to pass on some of my skills to someone else but it also helped me improve some of my own skills

Time: 25 hours service

Reflection

Reflection based on the learning outcomes
  • planned and iniated activies: For this activity I had to plan activities that I could do with the student and of course I tried to make things challenging but also fun. some of these planned activities included conversations using new vocabulary learned whilst other activities were things such as learning new verb tenses and new grammar rules and learning how to apply these when writing or in conversation.
  • undertaken new challenges: Before doing this activity I had never really tutored anyone before so it was a new challenge. the activity has taught me how different people have different ways of learning and understanding and the activity has taught me how to work with that and help someone understand new concepts in their own way.

Reflection based on the learner profile
  • open-minded:  this activity has taught me to be more open-minded; it has made me aware of different ways of understanding and different ways of learning and teaching. the activity has made me more open to these different ways and this can be applied on a lot of things.
  • communicators;  Tutoring recquires a good level of communication with the tutor and the student. This activity has taught me how to keep a good communication and also how to be a better tutor. it is important you make sure the student actually understand by asking them to reflect on what they have done so far and what they need help with. this means you can work on the areas they feel weakest in and dont teach them something useless.
