Reflection Chicago Band

Chicago Band.

In grade 11 I played in the music band for the school's musical Chicago. This band include two other students, the music teachers, Ms Cuneo and Mr Anderson, as well as some parents. For these perfomances during the school's musical we had a lot of rehearsal during lunch and we had rehearsed with the whole cast of the play for a few days for hours. It was a lot of fun but also stressful and performing was quite scary.

Time: 20 hours creativity

Reflection

Reflection based on the learning outcomes:
  • show perseverance and commitment:  This activity was quite challenging for me because i have stage fright,so i really had to work hard to be able to perform. furthermore we had a lot of rehearsal and sometimes we had to play the same piece over and over again in order to get them right. this took quite some perseverance and a few students in the band decided to quit with the activity. in the end i had a lot of fun and i was proud at myself for going through with it
  • working collaboratively with others: of course to be in a band we all had to work together and make sure we had the same timing. furthermore sometimes we had to help eachother to make sure everyone was doing okay. moreover we also had to work with the cast and we had to play songs repeatedly so they could rehearse their dances with the music and make sure the timing was right. lastly I also helped the male cast members when it was time for them to put on their stage make up which was quite difficult for them. the activity has made me more confident when working with others and has improved my collaboration skills

Reflection based on the learner profile:
  • risk taker:  Because I have stage fright this was quite a scary situation for me, but i did really want to perform. in the end with all the rehearsal the performance went quite well and i made sure i didnt miss anything. doing this activity has made me a bit less scared when performing and it was definitely worth the risk because we all had a lot of fun and everything went really well
  • reflective:  of course to perform in a group and to do well I also had to be reflective and rehearse the songs that were more difficult by myself so i could keep improving and that the whole band would sound better. doing this made me become more reflective and think about my own skills and what to improve. this is also good to apply to my classes and other hobbies

Reflection watersports

Watersports

in the summer when i went on a group trip to indonesia i had a lot of watersports activities and classes. Every morning i would have aquarobics classes in a small group, in the afternoon i did a lot of swimming laps, about 30 to 40 each day and a few days i did bodyboarding and surfing classes. this helped me develop new skills but it also increased my physical fitness, which was one of my aims.

Time: 25 hours action

Reflection

Reflection based on the learning outcomes
  • show perseverance and commitment: during this activity i showed a lot of perseverance and commitment. It was quite hard at the start to be able to keep up all the activities each day, especially swimming so many laps, because it took a lot of physical fitness. however i never skipped a class or skipped swimming the laps because i really wanted to keep going and improve my stamina and physical fitness. furthermore the surfing was pretty scary to me at first but once i tried a few times it went better and i kept trying.
  • develop new skills: This activity has also helped me develop some new skills, mostly surfing and bodyboarding but i also improved my diving techniques and i learned some good aquarobics routines. learning all this was very interesting and fun and it was also a good way to improve my health and fitness. furthermore i definitely felt improvement with the surfing and bodyboarding as well as my diving techniques.

Reflection based on the learner profile
  • risk taker:  a few of the activities were new and sometimes quite scary to me, yet i sticked with them and i tried everything out, even if it was quite scary to me. this gave the result if me having a lot of fun actually, and improving my surfing and bodyboarding skills. i think taking those risk definitely has made me more open to try new things and face challenges.

Reflection organisational skills

Organisational skills

In grade 12 i helped the guidance counsellor and Mr. Logan with the organisational skills class for the lower grades. during this project we helped the younger students become more organised with fun activities. a couple other 12th graders and me helped supervise and carry out the activities with the younger students every lunch on Wednesday.

Time: 10 hours of service

Reflection

Reflection based on the learning outcomes
  • working collaboratively with others:  with this project I had to work with the other students from my grade who were supervising, the teachers that were organising the classes and of course the younger students. some of the students had more difficulties than others and needed more help. as the ones supervising we went around the classroom and made sure everyone understood the tasks and what they had to do. furthermore we also helped give the students ideas about the project they were doing for the class that they were going to show to the 5ht graders in primary school.

Reflection based on the learner profile
  • principled:   To help supervise the children and help them with their projects of course we had to be fair. we had to make sure everyone got the help they needed and not leave anyone out. furthermore we also had to make sure that each student got to speak up and participate and not just a small group of students. moreover sometimes we also had to be strict when some of students were not paying attention and were distracting the others who were really trying to benefit from the activity. doing this definitely has made me think about making sure i'm principled and that i'm being fair when helping a group of students

Reflection Hiking

Hiking

This summer I went on a group tour around an island in Indonesia. During this trip we did a large amount of hiking, especially the first week. We hiked up multiple volcanoes, one of them in the middle of the night to see the beautiful night sky and also to see the sunrise from the volcano. of course this took quite some physical effort, especially when going up. Furthermore it was also quite slippery sometimes so it was important we kept an eye on each other. Besides hiking up volcanoes we also went a very big temple which included a lot of hikinh

Time: 20 hours of Action

Reflection

Reflection based on the learning outcomes
  • Increased awareness of my own strengths and areas for growth: During this activity i came very aware of my own strengths and areas for growth when looking at my physical fitness. The hiking could become quite hard because it was very hot and at quite high altitudes. this made me aware that i definitely has some areas of growth regarding my physical fitness. furthermore i also noticed that i had more difficulties with going up the volcanoe then down, but this gradually improved over the week.
  • undertaking new challenges:  Hiking up volcanoes like on this was quite a challenge for em, first of all because i may not have a great stamina. furthermore i am also quite accident prone so i had to be extra careful, as i noticed when i slipped during hiking. this was also my first time going on hikes like this so it was also very new to me, but it was very much worth it
  • show perseverance and commitment:  for this activity i needed a lot of perseverance because it involved long hikes and it was very tiring. moreover it was also extremely warm and it could be dusty and smelly as well. I did however see everything through and I made it to the top of  each volcano. thanks to this perseverance i got to see amzing views such as the sunrise from a volcano and a beautiful night ksy
Reflection based on the learner profile
  • risk taker:  hiking also included some risks. furthermore it was also a new activity for me and becuase of that it was challenging and a bit scary at some points. however i did keep going the risk taking was very much worth it because it gave amazing views and other activties. It also gave me the oppurtunity to take some great pictures which definitely made everything worth it

Reflection Ghana Team

Helping the Ghana team

In grade 11 I helped out the Ghana team at their meetings, helping them come up with ways to reach more money, plan events, and helped out at events such as the Ghana gala. Sadly I could not go on the trip but the experience alone of helping the team helped me become more aware of global issues and the ethical implications of such a project and all the things involved. whilst helping the team we learned a lot about Ghana and important issues such as poverty.

Time: 18 hours service

Reflection

Reflection based on the learning outcomes
  • Engaged with issues of global importance: with this activity we engaged with issues of global importance. the project was to build an orphanage in Ghana. Of course this is related to the issues such as poverty and health issues as well. With this project we also learned a lot about Ghana and the different situations in the country. furthermore we aslo learned more about the history of Africa and the different issues going pn
  • consider ethical importance:  of course this activity also made us consider the ethical importance of what we were doing. furthermore everything used for the project was also considered, such as the materials used to build the orphanage and the products to sell. for example the shirts sold to raise money were created by a small independent company and it helped the workers earn a fair income
  • working collaboratively with others:  For this project we had to work very closely together to make sure we all raised enough money, came up with good ideas and made sure the events planned went smoothly. of course part of this included discussing everything with  Ms. Lavalle the supervisor. this activity has helped me become better in working closely with a team and coming up and working out ideas with each other.

Reflection based on the learner profile
  • Thinker:  This activity has helped me think more creatively to look for solutions if any problems occured but also to think about ways to raise more money and ways to set up events, create posters. furthermore it also helped me think more critically and together we looked at eachother's ideas and had to think critically to see which ideas were the most realistic. doing this activity really made me think and consider a lot of things and has made me grow on some of these areas. I can no apply these skills to other subjects as well.

Reflection Flute practise

Flute practise

I have been playing flute since I was 7. Recently I have not taken private flute classes but i do practise a lot by myself and I practise for activities such as the school's concert band. Practising flute gives me the oppurtunity to find pieces i want to learn and learning them. furthermore it causes me to reflect on my own skills and which areas or which songs i need to improve on. I enjoy playing the flute very much and it is also a good way to relax. furthermore a lot of practise enables me to do solo perfomance such as for the school's talent show

Time: 80 hours creative

Reflection

reflection based on the learning outcomes

  • increased awareness of my strengths and areas of growth: practising the flute helpsn me increase my own awareness of my strengths and the areas of growth. it helps me be aware which skills and pieces of music or even which notes need to be improved and also how i have grown on different areas by practising. for example when learning a song it helps me be aware of which areas are importanted to be rehearsed and which areas are fairly easy. Because of this it also gives me the ability to use this awareness in my school subjects and for other skills.
  • show perseverance and commitment:  I have been playing the flute for 10 years now so this activity definitely shows my perserverance and my commitment to music and my instrument. Even if I have been playing for so long it is still very fun for me and because i continue to learn a vaiery of songs with different difficulties it stays interesting and every now and then i still learn something new. the activity also helps me to be able to stick with something untill the end.

Reflection based on the learner profile
  • reflective: This activity has alspo helped me become more reflective because it makes me be reflective on my own skills are my weaknesses. being reflective is very important because it means you can improve but sometimes it also means you can help others improve. furthermore being reflective can help with things such as school but also other activities.

Reflection English Tutoring

English tutoring

During the summer I tutored a 14 year old Dutch boy who takes English in his Dutch school. Due to the fact that I have been going to an international school for a while now I could help him improve on his English. For his summer homework he read a book and I was there to help him when he did not understand something. Furthermore I helped him a lot with his speaking skills, which he had some difficulties with. Helping a student who had some weaknesses in an area I feel pretty strongin enabled me to pass on some of my skills to someone else but it also helped me improve some of my own skills

Time: 25 hours service

Reflection

Reflection based on the learning outcomes
  • planned and iniated activies: For this activity I had to plan activities that I could do with the student and of course I tried to make things challenging but also fun. some of these planned activities included conversations using new vocabulary learned whilst other activities were things such as learning new verb tenses and new grammar rules and learning how to apply these when writing or in conversation.
  • undertaken new challenges: Before doing this activity I had never really tutored anyone before so it was a new challenge. the activity has taught me how different people have different ways of learning and understanding and the activity has taught me how to work with that and help someone understand new concepts in their own way.

Reflection based on the learner profile
  • open-minded:  this activity has taught me to be more open-minded; it has made me aware of different ways of understanding and different ways of learning and teaching. the activity has made me more open to these different ways and this can be applied on a lot of things.
  • communicators;  Tutoring recquires a good level of communication with the tutor and the student. This activity has taught me how to keep a good communication and also how to be a better tutor. it is important you make sure the student actually understand by asking them to reflect on what they have done so far and what they need help with. this means you can work on the areas they feel weakest in and dont teach them something useless.
